> Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

> **Matthew 5:6 (BSB)**

There is a moment, right before a meal, when the smell of something warm hits you and your whole body responds before your brain even catches up. That ache is real. It is not weakness or lack of discipline. It is the body doing exactly what it was made to do, signaling that it needs to be filled.

Matthew 5:6 uses that same language on purpose. Hunger and thirst are not polite metaphors. They are urgent, physical, undeniable. Jesus chose those words because everyone in that crowd knew what it felt like to genuinely need something. And He said the people who carry that kind of ache toward righteousness are the ones who will be satisfied.

The table, then, is more than a place to refuel. Every time we sit down to eat, we are living inside a small picture of a much bigger truth: we were made to need, and we were made to be filled. Receiving a meal with gratitude is its own quiet act of faith. It says, yes, I am dependent, and yes, that is okay.

## At the table today: Before You Take Your First Bite, Say What You're Hungry For

At one meal today, pause before you eat and name two things out loud or in a whisper: what your body is hungry for right now, and what your soul is hungry for right now. It does not have to be poetic. "I'm hungry for this food and I'm hungry for some peace" counts. Then eat. That small act of naming turns an ordinary meal into a moment of honest prayer.

## A prayer

*Lord, thank You for the hunger that reminds me I was made to need You, and for the grace that meets me at every table.*

What are you carrying an ache for today that you haven't yet brought to the table with God?
