Every time I bring these to a gathering, somebody grabs three before they even sit down and then spends the rest of the night asking me what they just ate. Jicama is one of those underrated gems that most people walk right past at the grocery store, and that is a crime because it is crunchy, mildly sweet, and sturdy enough to hold a pile of toppings without wilting on you like a sad cracker. Pairing it with silky whipped avocado and smoky charred poblano is one of those combinations that just makes sense. Clean, fresh, completely grain-free, and honestly a little bit impressive for something this straightforward.

## Nutritional Benefits

### Avocado: Healthy Fats Your Body Actually Needs

- Rich in monounsaturated oleic acid, the same fat found in olive oil, which supports heart health and reduces inflammation.
- Loaded with potassium, even more per gram than a banana, which helps regulate blood pressure.
- Contains vitamins K, B6, C, and E, plus folate, making it one of the most nutrient-dense whole foods you can eat.
- The fat in avocado helps your body absorb fat-soluble nutrients from everything else on the plate.

### Jicama: The Prebiotic Crunch You Didn't Know You Needed

- An excellent source of inulin, a prebiotic fiber that feeds the good bacteria in your gut.
- Low in digestible carbohydrates and high in water content, making it a genuinely low-glycemic base.
- Provides vitamin C and trace amounts of iron, magnesium, and potassium.
- Its natural crispness makes it a satisfying chip or cracker replacement with zero grains involved.

### Poblano Pepper: Smoky and Surprisingly Nutritious

- One of the milder chilies but still packed with capsaicin, which has anti-inflammatory and metabolism-supporting properties.
- An outstanding source of vitamin C and vitamin A, both of which support immune function and skin health.
- Charring the pepper concentrates its flavor and adds a depth you simply cannot get any other way.
- Provides dietary fiber, folate, and a range of antioxidants from its rich green pigments.

### Pepitas: A Tiny Seed Doing a Lot of Work

- One of the best plant-based sources of magnesium, a mineral most people are chronically low in.
- Contain zinc, which supports immune function, hormone balance, and skin health.
- Provide a satisfying crunch and a dose of protein and healthy fats that help make this appetizer actually filling.
- Rich in antioxidants, including vitamin E and carotenoids.

## FAQs

### Can I make the whipped avocado ahead of time?

You can prep it up to 2 hours ahead. Press plastic wrap directly on the surface of the avocado mixture so there is zero air contact, then refrigerate it. Give it a quick stir before serving and check the seasoning again. I do not recommend making it the night before because even with this trick it will start to discolor.

### Where do I find jicama?

Most large grocery stores carry it in the produce section near the root vegetables or in international/Latin food sections. Whole Foods, Sprouts, and any Latin market will definitely have it. It looks like a big, tan, slightly flattened turnip. You want one that feels firm and heavy with no soft spots.

### Can I roast the poblano in the oven instead of on the burner?

Absolutely. Place the whole pepper on a foil-lined baking sheet under your broiler set to high. Broil for 4 to 5 minutes per side, rotating until all sides are blistered and darkened. Then steam and peel exactly the same way. The broiler method works great if you have an electric stove or are charring a bigger batch.

### Is this Whole30 compliant?

Yes. Every single ingredient in this recipe is Whole30 approved as written. No added sweeteners, no grains, no legumes, no dairy. Just real food.

### What if I cannot find jicama?

Thick cucumber slices are the best swap and are also refreshing with the avocado topping. You could also use endive leaves as little cups, or thick-cut rounds of watermelon radish if you want something with a bit more color and bite.

### How spicy is this?

Mild to moderate. Poblanos are one of the gentler chilies out there, closer to a bell pepper in heat with just a hint of warmth. The small amount of cayenne adds a slight kick. If you want more heat, add a seeded minced jalapeño to the whipped avocado or use a hotter pepper like an Anaheim or even a seeded serrano.

If you make these, snap a photo and tag me. I want to see your platter. And if the jicama thing was new for you, welcome to the club. Once you start using it as a chip swap you will never go back to the sad rice cracker situation. Drop a comment below and tell me how it went.

## Whipped Avocado and Roasted Poblano Bites on Jicama Rounds

Silky whipped avocado mixed with smoky roasted poblano, garlic, lime, and fresh cilantro, piled onto crisp jicama rounds and finished with a sprinkle of toasted pepitas and flaky sea salt. A crowd-pleasing, totally paleo appetizer that looks fancy but comes together in under 30 minutes.

- Prep time: 15 min
- Cook time: 12 min
- Total time: 27 min
- Servings: 4 servings (about 20 bites)

### Ingredients

- 1 large poblano pepper
- 3 ripe avocados, pitted and scooped
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about 1 large lime)
- 1 small clove garlic, finely grated
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more to taste
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped, plus more for garnish
- 1 medium jicama (about 1 pound), peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
- 3 tablespoons raw pepitas
- Flaky sea salt, for finishing
- Thin lime wheels or zest, for garnish (optional)

### Instructions

1. Char the poblano: Place the poblano directly over a gas burner on medium-high heat (or under your oven broiler set to high). Char it on all sides, turning with tongs every 2 to 3 minutes, until the skin is blistered and blackened all over, about 8 to 10 minutes total. Transfer to a small bowl, cover tightly with plastic wrap or a plate, and let it steam for 5 minutes.
2. Peel and prep the pepper: Uncover the poblano and use your fingers or a paper towel to rub away the charred skin, it should slide right off. Slice the pepper open, discard the seeds and stem, and finely chop the flesh. Set aside.
3. Toast the pepitas: While the poblano steams, heat a small dry skillet over medium heat. Add the pepitas and toast, shaking the pan often, until they are golden and just starting to pop, about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
4. Whip the avocado: Add the scooped avocado, lime juice, grated garlic, cumin, fine sea salt, and cayenne to a medium bowl. Use a fork (or a hand mixer on low for an extra-silky result) to mash and whip until the mixture is very smooth and creamy. Fold in the chopped roasted poblano and fresh cilantro. Taste and adjust salt or lime as needed.
5. Prep the jicama: Using a sharp knife or mandoline, slice the peeled jicama into rounds roughly 1/4-inch thick. Pat them dry with a paper towel so the topping stays put.
6. Assemble: Arrange the jicama rounds on a large serving platter in a single layer. Spoon a generous tablespoon of the whipped avocado mixture onto each round. Top with toasted pepitas, a few cilantro leaves, a pinch of flaky sea salt, and a small strip of lime zest or a thin half-wheel of lime if using.
7. Serve immediately while the jicama is crisp and the avocado topping is fresh and bright.
