Weeknight dinner in this house comes down to one thing: if the kids eat it without complaining, and I feel good about what went into it, that is an absolute win. That is it. I am not trying to make a Michelin-star meal on a Tuesday. I am trying to feed my family real food without losing my mind, and these honey garlic chicken drumsticks do exactly that. Drumsticks are one of the most underrated cuts of chicken on the planet. They are cheap, they stay juicy, and kids will pick them up and eat them without drama because they basically come with a built-in handle. The glaze here is sticky and sweet with a little savory depth from the coconut aminos and garlic, and everything roasts together on one pan. The sweet potatoes get these gorgeous caramelized edges, the broccoli gets just a little crispy, and the chicken skin turns that deep amber color that means it is going to be good. This is the kind of meal I needed to know about years before I actually figured it out. Simple ingredients, real food, no fuss. One pan in the oven and dinner is done.
Nutritional Benefits
Pastured Chicken Drumsticks
- Dark meat chicken is rich in zinc, iron, and B vitamins, especially B12 and niacin, which your body needs for energy and nerve function.
- The bone-in, skin-on format means more collagen-supporting gelatin and healthy fats compared to boneless skinless cuts.
- A solid source of complete protein to keep everyone full and satisfied through the evening.
Sweet Potatoes
- Loaded with beta-carotene, the precursor to vitamin A, which supports immune function, skin health, and vision.
- Provide a steady-burning source of complex carbohydrates without the blood sugar spike of refined starches.
- Rich in potassium and manganese, both important for muscle function and bone health.
Broccoli
- One of the most nutrient-dense vegetables you can put on a pan. High in vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate.
- Contains sulforaphane, a compound that supports the body's natural detoxification pathways.
- Good source of fiber to support healthy digestion and gut function.
Coconut Aminos
- A soy-free, gluten-free swap for soy sauce that still delivers that savory umami depth.
- Lower in sodium than traditional soy sauce and contains no refined additives.
- Naturally sweetened, so it pairs perfectly with the raw honey in this glaze without needing extra sugar.
Raw Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar
- Raw honey brings natural sweetness along with trace enzymes and antioxidants that refined sugar simply does not have.
- Apple cider vinegar adds brightness and balance to the glaze while also supporting healthy digestion.
- Together they create that sweet-tart flavor profile that makes this glaze genuinely addictive.
FAQs
Can I make this Whole30 compliant?
Honey is not compliant on Whole30, so for a strict Whole30 version, leave the honey out entirely and increase the coconut aminos by a tablespoon. The glaze will be more savory than sticky, but it is still really good. You can also add a splash of fresh orange juice to bring a little natural sweetness back in.
My kids hate broccoli. What vegetable can I swap in?
Totally fine. Cauliflower florets, green beans, zucchini chunks, or sliced carrots all work well here. Just keep an eye on cook time since different vegetables have different roasting times. Heartier ones like carrots can go on the pan earlier with the sweet potatoes.
Can I use chicken thighs or drumettes instead of full drumsticks?
Absolutely. Bone-in skin-on thighs work great and will take a similar amount of time. Drumettes or wings will cook a bit faster, so check them around the 30 to 35 minute mark total.
How do I store and reheat leftovers?
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, pop everything back on a baking sheet in a 375°F oven for about 10 to 12 minutes. The microwave will work in a pinch but you will lose the crispy skin.
Is this recipe safe to make ahead for meal prep?
Yes. You can mix the glaze up to 3 days ahead and keep it in the fridge. You can also cube the sweet potatoes and cut the broccoli the night before and store them separately. Day-of assembly is fast, and the chicken is best roasted fresh for that crispy skin.
Why are my drumsticks not getting crispy?
Two things usually cause this. First, make sure you pat the chicken completely dry before adding the glaze. Moisture is the enemy of crispiness. Second, do not crowd the pan. If the pieces are touching or overlapping, they will steam instead of roast. Use two pans if needed.

Honey Garlic Glazed Chicken Drumsticks with Roasted Sweet Potatoes and Broccoli
Sticky, golden chicken drumsticks coated in a simple honey garlic glaze, roasted alongside sweet potatoes and broccoli on one pan. Kid-approved, paleo-friendly, and on the table in about an hour.
Ingredients
- 8 chicken drumsticks (about 3 lbs), patted dry
- 3 tablespoons raw honey
- 4 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 3 tablespoons coconut aminos
- 2 tablespoons avocado oil, divided
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt, plus more to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, omit for younger kids)
- 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch cubes
- 3 cups broccoli florets
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil (for the vegetables)
- Salt and pepper for the vegetables
- Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet (or two if needed) with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the honey, minced garlic, coconut aminos, 1 tablespoon of avocado oil, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Set aside about 2 tablespoons of the glaze for basting later.
- Place the dried chicken drumsticks in a large bowl. Pour the remaining glaze over the top and toss well until every piece is thoroughly coated.
- Toss the sweet potato cubes with 1 tablespoon of avocado oil and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Spread them in a single layer on one half of the prepared baking sheet.
- Arrange the glazed chicken drumsticks in a single layer on the other half of the baking sheet, making sure they are not crowded.
- Roast at 425°F for 25 minutes. While they roast, toss the broccoli florets with the remaining 1 tablespoon of avocado oil, salt, and pepper.
- After 25 minutes, flip the sweet potatoes and push them to the edges. Add the broccoli florets to the pan. Brush the drumsticks with the reserved glaze.
- Return the pan to the oven and roast for another 18 to 20 minutes, until the chicken skin is deep golden and sticky and reads 165°F at the thickest part of the drumstick, and the sweet potatoes are fork-tender with caramelized edges.
- Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes. Scatter fresh parsley over everything and serve straight from the pan.
