For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:7 (BSB)
You know the reach. Not hunger, exactly. More like a reflex. The afternoon gets loud, the to-do list piles up, the news is too much, and before you've even thought about it, your hand is in the pantry. Not because your body asked for anything. Because your mind needed somewhere to go.
That reaching is fear doing what fear does. It looks for a quick exit, something to muffle the noise, something that feels like control for about forty-five seconds. Food gets recruited for jobs it was never designed to do, and we end up eating in a fog, not tasting anything, not satisfied, just a little more numb than we were before.
The verse given for today makes something plain: that anxious static is not something God put in us. The spirit we were given runs on a different fuel entirely. Power, love, and self-control. Not white-knuckle willpower, but something steadier. A kind of inner authority that can pause before the reach, notice what is actually happening, and choose from a grounded place rather than a panicked one.
That steadiness starts small. It can start at the table today, with one meal that you actually show up for. Not perfect. Not a ritual. Just present.
At the table today: Name It Before You Eat
Before one meal today, stop for just a breath and ask yourself: am I hungry, or am I anxious? You don't have to fix anything. You don't have to put the food back. Just name what's true. Hungry. Tired. Stressed. Grateful. That one honest moment is the difference between eating from fear and eating from a place of actual awareness. The spirit of self-control God gave you isn't loud or forceful. It's that quiet, clear voice that says, I see what's happening here. Practice hearing it today.
A prayer
Lord, remind me today that the noise in my head is not my master, and that the steadiness You put in me is stronger than any anxious reach.
