The Morning That Didn't Ask You to Earn It

Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!

Lamentations 3:22–23 (BSB)

The kitchen is quiet before anyone else is up. The coffee is brewing or maybe it isn't yet. The day hasn't demanded anything from you, but your mind is already running the list: what to eat, what to fix, whether yesterday's choices were good enough, what today is going to cost you. Worry doesn't wait for an invitation. It shows up before breakfast.

That's exactly where this verse lands for me. Not at the end of a good day when you've earned some peace, but at the start of a plain one. The mercy described in Lamentations wasn't written by someone comfortable. It was written in the middle of real loss and real ruin, and the writer still found something that held: that the faithfulness of God refreshes itself every single morning whether we noticed it yesterday or not.

That resets something in me around food, honestly. A lot of anxious eating starts in the morning, in that rush-and-grab energy where you're already three steps ahead of yourself before you've swallowed your first bite. The meal becomes another item to optimize or mess up rather than something steady and good given to a body that is still here, still breathing, still being sustained.

The table is not a test. The morning is not a performance review. You didn't have to earn the light coming through the window, and you don't have to earn the nourishment either. Receive it.

At the table today: Eat Your First Meal Sitting Down, With Nothing to Prove

Before your first meal today, pause for just a moment with both feet on the floor. No phone, no plan, no mental grading of what you're about to eat. Take one breath, acknowledge that you made it to another morning, and then eat. That's it. Not a perfect meal. Not a healing protocol. Just a person, sitting down, receiving something good.

A prayer

Lord, before I have done a single thing right today, Your mercies are already here, and I want to eat and move and live from that steadiness rather than from the noise in my head.

Journal

What would change about the way you feed yourself today if you started from the belief that the goodness available to you this morning was already given, not something you still have to earn?
