What Your Plate Is Actually Holding

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Colossians 3:2 (BSB)

The refrigerator door is open and you are staring into it, but you are not really hungry. Your mind is already three hours ahead, running the list, bracing for the hard conversation, doing the math on something that hasn't happened yet. Whatever you grab right now has almost nothing to do with food.

That moment is worth paying attention to. Not because eating from anxiety is a moral failure, but because the body is always telling you where the mind has gone. Anxious hands open cabinets. A racing mind skips breakfast entirely or eats so fast it barely registers. The noise around food, the noise we carry to the table, is usually just the noise inside us looking for somewhere to land.

Colossians 3:2 is not a verse about willpower or clean eating. It is an invitation to reorder what you are fixed on. When the mind is set on things above, the frantic grip on earthly things loosens a little. Not perfectly, not all at once, but enough. Enough to sit down. Enough to take a breath before the first bite. Enough to let the meal be a meal instead of a consequence of whatever you are afraid of.

At the table today: Before You Open the Fridge, Name Where Your Mind Is

Just once today, before you open the refrigerator or reach for a snack, stop for a full three seconds and ask yourself one thing: where is my mind right now? Not to judge the answer. Just to see it. If you are anxious, name it. If you are scattered, name it. Then take one slow breath and decide what you actually want to eat, from that quieter place rather than the frantic one. That is it. Three seconds, one breath, one honest look. Small, doable, and more powerful than it sounds.

A prayer

Lord, when my hands reach for food before my mind has found any stillness, steady me with the reminder that you are above the noise, and that I can return to you before I reach for anything else.

Journal

When you eat in a hurry or without thinking, what is your mind usually fixed on in that moment?
